Vice President Kamala Harris made history again today when she formally accepted the Democratic Candidacy for President of the United States. She closed the fourth and final night of the 2024 Democratic Convention with a speech that should squash any question about her qualifications and ability to lead this nation.
The Convention started with a love fest and appreciation for President Joe Biden, who will go down in history as one of America’s great Presidents. After successfully serving as Vice President in the Obama Administration, Joe Biden could have retired. However, after he and Americans nationwide witnessed tiki torch carrying white supremacists boldly chanting horrific racial slurs and quoting Adolph Hitler, behavior encouraged by President Trump, then Fmr. Vice President Joseph Biden decided to run for President against Trump to “save the soul of America” when Trump did not denounce their actions. Even though Joe Biden won the Presidency, for the past four years, Trump has continued to rule the Republican Party and try to undermine the Biden Presidency. President Biden had every right to run again in this 2024 election, however in a selfless act that will go down in history as an example of true integrity and character, he passed the torch and endorsed his VP Kamala Harris to run for President instead of himself when his age and ability to beat Trump were seriously questioned. This act is unheard of in politics anywhere, and the love and appreciation for his selflessness to pass the torch to Kamala Harris kicked off day one of the convention.
The party continued throughout the week. This year the roll call, when each of the states announce who they endorse for president, was done to music for the first time in American history. It was a party atmosphere that will surely change the way roll calls will be done moving forward.
In one short month VP Harris has risen to the occasion and the Democratic Party has united behind her to deliver an historic 2024 Democratic Convention that was a striking contrast to the Republican Convention held last month. Many more groups have united to support Kamala Harris including; Win With Black Women, White Women for Harris, Evangelicals for Harris, Black Men for Harris, White Dudes for Harris, and even Republicans for Harris. In contrast, MAGA Republicans followed Trump during the RNC with blaming, name calling, invoking fear, hatred and division. The Democrats showed the opposite; love for country first, inclusion, humility and appreciation for all Americans.
The Convention speeches were excellent and historic. All of them had once central theme; Donald Trump should never be let close to the Office of President again given his past performance and abhorrent behavior. His refusal to admit defeat in a free and fair election in 2020, the refusal to participate in the peaceful transfer of power, and his misleading of his supporters who still faithfully follow and believe his proven lies and deceit has severely divided the country, families, and friendships.
Joy, happiness, and hope erupted at the DNC this week and it is spreading across America. There is hope in the air again for America to lead in a democracy that gives hope to the world that attaining the same is possible. The Autocrats are pulling for Trump to join them, and the race may be close. However, this very successful and historic Democratic National Convention may soon prove that the soul of American democracy is strong and able to defeat autocracy.
